The Future Of Work Is Happening Now — Remote Work Is Here To Stay

This year has been a rollercoaster in terms of… Everything — if we’re going, to be honest. And no other aspect has gained more traction in the software developer’s world than remote work. Up until February of this year, remote work was considered an exception, a perk that you offer that one great candidate so you can snatch him. But everything changed.

It’s essential to understand one thing: remote work is here to stay. There is no going back to the office for everyone.

Don’t believe us?

Then maybe you’ll believe more reputable sources such as Facebook, Twitter, and Reddit, who have basically accepted the idea that remote work is not going to go away and have allowed their employees to remain fully remote, either forever, or at the very least until next year.

And even if some companies might backtrack a bit on this, it’s going to be hard to go back to a 5 day week of office work. And there are plenty of reasons for that, especially in software development.

First off, as a developer, you can do your job anywhere you can charge your laptop and have Internet access. And after 8+ months of doing this for some, you kinda start to get the hang of it and think to yourself: “Huh, maybe this is not such a bad idea after all. Let’s make this more permanent.”. Of course, we’re not saying that offices will go away completely.

However, we do feel that the following statement is true: companies who will insist on full office work will lose people in the long run, especially when big-name companies are advocates of remote work. We’ve read many stories and talked to many people who were unconvinced about this whole work-from-home thing. And after months of doing this, we’re glad to report that many of them can’t get enough of it. This makes us happy — especially because our culture is fully remote for 10 years already and together with our distributed community, we can see the benefits, advantages, and success that convinces us every day that from the beginning we made the right decision to work like this.

I, personally have always been an advocate for this, mostly because I hated losing 1.5 to 2 hours of my time on public transport.

Research and advisory company Gartner has found that businesses looking beyond the COVID-19 pandemic are going to be facing a new kind of challenge: managing a new kind of highly complicated, hybrid workforce. The study found that 82% of business leaders say their organizations plan to let employees continue to work from home at least some of the time, while 47% plan to allow employees to do so permanently.

To conclude…

This is our take on the whole remote work scenario that is happening right now around the world. Of course, this is based on what we’ve seen and talked with people in our field of work. Your situation may be different, but the idea is the same: people who are currently doing remote work will probably want to keep doing it in the future. And companies are starting to take notice of that.

We’ve always wanted to see what the future looks like and now we have the chance to do so, because… The future of work is happening now!
